Columbus 2, Dallas 0 : now onto Philly
Dallas traveled out on the road, and again the result Sunday night was the same. The Columbus Blue Jackets beat Dallas 2-0 (one goal coming as an empty-netter) and the Stars road struggles continue. But this time it can not be blamed on Marty Turco or the defense because both played good and basically only allowed one goal. Now the problem is goal scoring, as Dallas has now been shutout 2 of its last 3 road games and has only 4 goals in their last 5 games away from the AAC. Inconsistent goaltending, add in a very few goals scored and you have a formula for how to lose games on the road. This has to a sign for management and the front office. They can’t seem to do anything right away from home, and even at home they don’t stellar half the time. I know they have to have come to the realization something needs to change, and I am all for not jumping early or making a bad trade just for change, but they have to seriously be considering different options of what to do with this team.
Dallas keeps the road trip going with a trip into Philadelphia Tuesday night and then onto Montreal Thursday night. Dallas needs to re-focus and bring the same effort from Marty and the blue-line each of these next two games and try to get some not named to Eriksson or Richards to contribute points on the road. Yes they are each top line Stars, but they are the only two players consistently scoring on the road. Guys like Neal, Modano, Morrow, Ott and even the youngster Benn have been missed in the offense lately on the road and just a couple of these guys stepping up will help this time. Modano still seems to be skating great and a lot of nights has a chance or two or creates one for one of the youung guys, they just need to start burying some of those. And is it just me, or is captain Brendan Morrow having a rough year? Coming off a major injury is hard and although he looks to be skating and hitting fine, it just seems like he is playing at 80% of the Morrow we are used to. Points and scoring stats seemed to be down some and at times he just can’t seem to come through with a big play. Trying is great, but whatever Crawford and this staff are trying does not seem to be working.
Dallas at Philly: 6PM CST on FSN-SW locally
Dallas is 4-6 in their last 10, but the Flyers come in having won 7 of their last 9 and starting to look like a playoff team. Key will be PP/PK play. Dallas wasted so much powerplay time in the Columbus game, and is at 18.8% on the year. Philadelphia is at 23.3% and has been playing great recently. I think Dallas has to get in and get the lead first on the road to get the energy up and keep the Flyers froming jumping out and making the Stars have to play catch-up early.
