So this little three game swing out east could be the season. The Stars played horribly for the first two games back and now they get to have a 3-game road trip against 3 of the top teams in the east starting today with a noon match-up with Pittsburgh and Crosby. Man I hope Otter pops Crosby one. But really, the Stars are in trouble. I took two friends to Thursday’s game against St. Louis, and in that game they did very little right and the defense could not stop getting beat. Also Turco was hung out to dry for the second game in a row, but he didn’t do much back. He only faced 11 shots in just over a period of work and let in 4 of them and a couple of those could have been kept out. So newly acquired Kari Lehtonen is tossed into the game and does decent allowing 2 goals the rest of the way while the defense continues to play bad in front of him.
It had already been said earlier this week that Kari would start in net today against Pitt, but the Stars decide to stick with him even after he played 38 mins in his first NHL action in since last April. But after not trading Turco, or making a move to pick up some defensive help, a lot of people are questioning Dallas right now. Joe Nieuwendyk even said he is upset by how they have come back and wants more “desperation” from the team, and he doesn’t think Marty’s focus is not where it needs to be returning from the break. Not good when the GM doesn’t make a move and then its publicly talking about how he feels about Turco’s play this week. To help matters more, Turco left the team after being pulled last game and did not return to the bench. He went and stayed in the locker room. Usually a pulled goalie goes back for a few but then comes back to the bench to sit with the team, but Turco showed his frustration with the team’s play and his own by staying back and choosing not to re-join the team on the bench.
So now the Stars 0-2 in the first two back, being outscored 11-2. And starting today they play Pitt, Washington, and then Buffalo. Dallas NEEDS at least 4 points on this trip, but that may be a tall-order when you think of how this team has played recently and how they have played on the road this season. Kari will start in net, and Ott has been moved to play the top line with Richards and Eriksson. Crawford has also sounded not pleased at all with his team coming back and apparently they practiced straight basics and defense after having a team meeting before the practice. Should be a better effort today, but we will see shortly.
