Stars 3, Predators 1
Does Kari Lehtonen want to be the Stars goalie next year or what? Seriously I remember seeing him play some when he was playing great for Atlanta with a shaky team in front of him. And plenty of us knew it might be possible for him to get healthy and turn into a #1 goalie, but most thought it would take the full off-season and some conditioning to see some of those results. Guess again! Believe me, I was not sure either how quick we would see fruit from Kari, but he is starting to show some. He us showed the possible future of the Stars in net again Tuesday night when he stopped 34 shots and the Stars beat the Nashville Predators 3-1 to start this 4 game road trip. He was great, stopping pucks when the team needed it and making a few highlight saves when the he needed to. Dallas got enough offense and better defense to put Kari in position to win and he more then did his part. He has now started 4 of the last 5 games and is 3-1 having allowed 10 goals over that stretch. He has played stellar in two of those games and decent in two of them, but part of one of the decent games was the defense was sloppy for almost the whole game and the team still won 5-4.
Tonight Dallas is out on the west coast against the loved (joking!) San Jose Sharks, and are still in the playoff race. Is there a good chance? Not at all, the team is 9 points behind the 8th seed Detroit, who has been playing great lately and would have to jump over Calgary who is 4 points behind the Red Wings. But do they still have something to play for? YES! And if anything else this team could keep picking up points and confidence and at least try to get close. A good way to keep it going would be to continue their recent success in San Jose going. The Stars have won both visits there this year in the shootout, which is funny considering the horrible time Dallas has had with the shootout this season. But since Dec 2006, the Stars are 9-2-1 in the HP Pavilion and seem to always play some of their better road games there in San Jose.
Dallas would love for the big guys to show up tonight as San Jose can play a physical game at home. Morrow, Ott, Fistric, Segal, Grossman, Robidas…anyone who can play tough and check needs to be “in” this game tonight. Dallas can not hope to just skate around the Sharks all night. And another great start from Lehtonen would help too.
