Stars 4, Wild 3 (shootout) to end the year, and maybe some careers.
If Thursday night’s home finish was the perfect, Hollywood ending at Dallas, then last night’s game was a fitting ending for this team. A good, even game for the most part that of course ended up going to a shootout. And then Jamie Benn puts a good finish on his great rookie season by winning it in the 4th round. This kid continues to show that although the Stars have Neal and Eriksson who have both started to blow up, Benn could be another player just as good or better then his other young mates.
So this is it? End of another season. Yet again the end of this season has a different feeling then what we are used to here in Dallas. We want the playoffs and we have become accustom to seeing the Stars at least get into the playoffs. But for the first time in their history since coming to Dallas in 1993, the Stars have now missed the palyoffs for two seasons in a row. It is hard realizing that the season, at least for following the Stars, is over and now we have to shift our minds to the off-season and watching the Mavs & Rangers.
I may be stubborn, but I do not want to say goodbye. I don’t want to talk about my favorite hockey player possibly….probably (crap) playing his last game. I will though always remember being a part of that game and being on the ice for the ceremony afterwards and seeing Modano crying, causing me to tear up too. I don’t want to talk about how screwed this team is because of the ownership issue and failings of Hicks. I want to talk the Stars and playoff hockey! But sadly I saw this coming in January and I think many others did too. Some of the youth has been good (Benn, Neal, Fistric, Grossman), while some of it has been bad (Niskanen, Niskanen, Daley still plays like a rookie, and Niskanen). But really I think it was the lack of leadership and talent in the defense that hurt this team most.
So alas I am left now to follow the Blackhawks and playoff hockey in general, while beginning to think towards the Stars summer, and my goodbye for Modano if he this was the end. But right now, I don’t want to think about it. It is still to soon, I just want to see playoff hockey and the Red Wings lose. PLEASE GOD, do not let the Red Wings win the Cup.
