First off let me start by wishing a Happy Father’s Day to everyone. Wish the fathers and grandfathers in your life a great day and remind them that they are special.
Now on to the matters of the hockey world. The 2010 NHL Draft starts this Friday and continues on Saturday. The draft is not only a big day for the future of franchises, but it is also a day where many teams may look to make moves to help them for the next season. Many of the draft picks outside of some of the first rounders probably won’t play in the NHL not just this, but for 2-3 years. But some teams will be looking to make moves to better their team now or free up cap room for the start of free agency on July 1st. So no matter what each team does, it can busy week for any team and all hockey fans should have plenty to read and speculate this week.
First off, my full mock draft is up at TooManyMenontheSite.com and I went over all 30 teams with short thoughts on each pick. Of course there are more mock drafts up at NHL.com and plenty of other sites. Feel free to give a few of them a look, especially mine, and start looking at who your team may take with their first round pick. Some may go with the “take the best player available” plan, while many will be looking for specific needs or players they covet.
During this week I will look at some of the players Dallas may be targeting with the 11th pick in the draft. On my mock, I predicted that the would go with Derek Forbort. Although he is a player that some see going in the top 10, others do not have him picked until very late in the first round. He has size, lots of raw talent, and some think he can be a Pronger or Phaneuf type of defenseman with his developing offensive game. Dallas needs defense now and having top-notch defensive prospects is always good for a franchise. Top-level defenseman are harder to come by and Dallas has budding forwards in Neal, Benn, and Glennie may be breaking through in the next year or two.
So look forward to more draft coverage and prospective draft picks this week. Have a great Father’s Day everyone!
