Last night the 2010 NHL draft kicked off with the first round taking place. There were a few surprises and a couple more moves after the few that happened earlier this week. But some of the huge moves that people were waiting for never happened, as names like Kaberle, Spezza, and Ribeiro stayed put at least for now. Dallas was in some talks but ultimately stayed quiet until it became time for them to pick with the 11th overall pick. At the time two of the top defenseman in Fowler and Gormley had slide down and were still there. As it turns out though, the Dallas Stars took Jack Campbell with that 11th pick.
Jack Campbell is considered the top goalie prospect by many boards and teams for this draft. Many mock drafts had him going around 10-15 and a couple said he could go to Dallas. I had him going to the Blues until the trade for Halak, and had a tiny feeling Dallas was looking at him. But trying to follow the draft while not being home last night, when I heard Dallas was up with Fowler, Gormley, and Forbort all still available I thought the Stars would take one of those three. But GM Joe speaks very highly of Campbell and quite a few scouts and media people have said he definitely could be a franchise goalie in a 4-5 years. I have heard nothing but good things about the kids work ethic, and he has won at every stage he has been at so far. He went 6-3-1 with the U.S. NTDP team with a 2.21 GAA. And he has won back-to-back under-18 World Championships. The kid can play, and he is American! What more is there to like?
Alright, the second round is kicking off. Could be a big day and some more trades may happen.
