There has been back and forth discussion among media and Mike Modano for the last few weeks about his future. It seems that Modano is leaning towards playing another season, but he kept saying that he was not sure if he is in the plans for the Stars for the next season. I woke up this morning to tweets and messages saying that now the Dallas Stars have decided not to offer Modano a contract for the next year. I was a little shocked and definitely upset. Modano has been my favorite Dallas player since I started following this team as a kid a couple years after they made the move to Dallas. So the greatest Dallas Star and American player of all time is no longer a Dallas Star. What does it mean now for the organization and Modano?
Well Mike no has to decide if he still wants to play. I think he is leaning towards playing, but he still has not made a decision and has said that if he were to go anywhere that it would have to be a team he is familiar with and knew the system. A couple of writers are immediately speculating about Tippet and Phoenix. God I hope not, but I know Modano has to what is best for him and if he wants to still play then I will always cheer for him. But if he does not want to play or just decides not, the Stars have already said they want Modano in some position in the organization. He has been the face of the franchise for 2 decades, and is one of the only faces some people around Dallas can immediately recognize with the Dallas Stars. He is also a sharp and great hockey mind, and I think if its just an position in the office, or maybe a position on the coaching or player development staff, that Modano would be great.
But today is a sad day. To realize my favorite Dallas Star and hero will no longer be skating in Black and Gold. He has been the Dallas Stars organization, when no one else knew anyone else. He has the record book filled with his name, and as GM Joe said “there will never be another Mike Modano” and I completely agree with him.
