The Dallas Stars put out a little better of a lineup last night while hosting the Colorado Avs, and got a win in their second preseason game behind solid goaltending. The Stars won 2-1 because of solid play in net and good penalty killing last night. New starter Kari Lehtonen played the whole game last night and made 34 stops on 35 shots while looking pretty sharp. He was relied upon so heavily because the Stars took 7 penalties last night, compared to only 3 taken by the Avs. But Kari had a great showing in his first action of the new year and he got just enough offense from his teammates. Brad Richards weaved his way through traffic and set up James Neal in the first period, and in the 3rd the Stars got a powerplay goal from Steve Ott with Richards and Neal assisting on it. So the top unit of the Stars showed well, and despite taking lots of penalties the team was able to play defense and get goaltending to get a win in their second preseason game.
Tonight Dallas has another home game against the St. Louis Blues. Expect some of the players that played Tuesday but had last night off to be in the action tonight. Brent Krahn will get a chance to make an impression since he will start in net and is expected to play the whole game unless he gets pulled. His competition for the backup goalie spot, Raycroft, will be the backup tonight and get a start sometime this coming week. It really could come down to who does better in their start for the backup spot as neither has done anything to really gain an edge so far. New addition Adam Burish will line with Morrow and Ribs, with Benn and Brunnstrom leading the 2nd line with either Vincour or Segal on the right wing. And the turnover defensive pair of Daley and Nisky will be split up tonight, which seems like a smart idea by coach Crawford (yes I actually said he had a smart idea, but it comes after a bad idea on Tuesday).
I am about to head down towards the AAC myself, hopefully the Stars can put another good effort out on the ice tonight for the home crowd. Go Stars!!!
