Today the Stars got their roster down to 23 players with some more cuts and movement following the end of the preseason. Dallas recalled Tom Wandell from his reconditioning time with the Texas Stars. He played one game last night with the team, in which the AHL team lost 5-0 to Houston. He is now headed back up to be with Dallas for the regular season, and I think could make a solid impact on the NHL roster.
The Dallas Stars also made 4 cuts, all of whom will be sent down to the Texas Stars and should be big impact guys down there. Forwards Aaron Gagnon and Tomas Vincour both made good impressions with their play during the preseason and lasted all the way through it, but were today assigned to the Texas Stars. Both provided offense and were great skaters, and Gagnon showed that he could be a good, young, two-way center. The two young men ended up back with the Texas Stars, but I would not be surprised if either or even both get sometime up with Dallas this season when injuries come up or other players on the lower half of the roster don’t perform (ehhhmmm….Brunnstrom???).
The other two players sent down to the Texas Stars were defenders Severin Blindenbacher and prospect Philip Larsen. Both looked pretty good during their playing time with Dallas. Blindenbacher got signed over the summer because the 27 year-old has been good over in Europe. With some time to get used to playing North American, he could be a solid 3rd line defenseman later this season or next year. Larsen looked to get better as the preseason went along, and put up points when he got playing time on the powerplay. He looks just about ready, but him getting plenty of playing time down in Austin should be good. And if Niskanen does not turn things around or someone gets injured, he could be the first call up and will almost definitely be on the roster next season.
