Not the Desired Result

The Stars took a 3 games win streak onto the road yesterday, but last night did not look like the team that got those three wins. The Colorado Avalanche peppered the net all night, and kept the Stars silent to win 5-0. The Avs looked prepared and took care of their chances, while the Stars looked like a very tired team playing their 3 game in 4 nights. You expect it to be hard, but last night the Stars could not get anything going and the further they fell behind the more frustrating it got.

Andrew Raycroft faced 45 shots, way too many for a goalie to face in just 3 periods of play. It looks bad that he gave up 5 goals, but he actually played decently and just faced too many good scoring chances for the Avs. They capitalized on some good scoring chances and Raycroft did not get a lot of help throughout the night. The Stars got off 31 shots on net, and Peter Budaj was great in net for the Avs. The Stars got shutout by an average backup goalie, but Budaj played very well and got a few bounces his way. The Stars hit the post three different times that I can think of in the first half of the game, and just did not get the bounces tonight. Tom Wandell ended up being the only player with an even plus/minus rating for the night, leaving the rest of the team on the wrong side of that stat.

The special teams were not good either. After being really improved over the last two weeks on the PK and the last 3 games on the PP, Dallas still played well on their PK but could not get anything with the powerplay. The Stars went 0-for-3 on the PP and even allowed a shorthanded goal to Colorado that made the game 3-0. A chance to pull it to 2-1, and instead it becomes 3-0. That was probably the back-breaker for the night.

Dallas now has a day off before practicing a few days and flying out for back-to-back road games in California. Hopefully they can rest up and find some energy, and come back ready to go on Thursday. And with a few days of practice, they need to work on the powerplay. They had an amazing game with it Thursday night, but other then that game it has been awful for almost the whole season so far.
