I am still not sure how the Dallas Stars pulled a win out of that game last night. Again the Stars won a game they probably shouldn’t of but this time it was bad. The Nashville Predators got more shots on net by far, out played the Stars for two periods of the game, got more powerplay chances, and as far into the game as early in the third looked like they were dominating the game and headed for a win. But after going down 2-1 early in the 3rd when Nashville capitalized on a breakaway, all of the sudden the Stars just flipped a switch and started scoring goals. When the final buzzer finally went off, the final score was 4-2 in favor of Dallas and when you look at the score sheet you should be confused. The shots for the Preds – 46 total. Shots for the Dallas Stars – 25 with many of those coming in the 3rd. But the odd things on the final boxscore do not end there.
The goal scores for the Stars last night are guys you would normally see taking penalties, and actually a couple of them did last night. And if you guessed the game winning goal would go to Mark Fistric, then you are either lying or you would only get that right probably once every 4-5 years. Steve Ott has to be one of the stars of the game after the goalie, because he got physical in the game and scored the Stars first goal which kept the Stars breathing early in the game. Andrew Raycroft played stellar again for the Stars in the crease and I am beginning to wonder how the hell the Stars got him for so cheap to be the backup. He stopped 44 of 46 shots and was all over the place making amazing saves throughout the game. Without his performance Dallas does not even have something to fight for in the 3rd period. He is now 7-3 this season with a 2.33GAA and .927SV% and just continues to impress me when he gets his nights in the crease. Except for one bad effort that he got little help in, he has been like an all-star of backups this season.
Tonight the Stars finish up the second half of the their back-to-back when they host the Detroit Red Wings at the AAC. The Red Wings roll into town as the top team in the west while the Stars are the 3rd best. But the Red Wings are starting to have serious issues with guys like Pavel Datsyuk, Cleary, Rafalski, and former Star Mike Modano are all out for the game and it came out this morning that Zetterberg has tightness in his back and may miss tonight as well. They are still the Red Wings and still have a good team, but the “Old Wings” are starting to get banged up and fighting off injuries. Dallas beat the Red Wings in Detroit 4-3 in an overtime thriller just a couple weeks ago, and tonight could be another chance for the Stars to beatup on the injured leader. B0th teams starters will be in net and the Stars need to get into the game early and stop playing flat early. Last night was the third game in a row where the Stars have come out flat in the first. Let’s hope tonight they give the hometown fans something early.
