Every year recently the Dallas Stars have played a nice home game for the Dallas fans to end the year. It is often one of the biggest crowds of the year and the Stars have had a history of success on New Year’s Eve games. So it is often a chance for the Stars and their fans to end the year and celebrate the coming of the next with a victory. Well this year the Stars need a big win at home. The Stars had a streak of five home games over six games, and a chance to pick up some valuable points in the west. But instead Dallas has gone 1-2-1 over the last four games and have not looked impressive in front of a few good home crowds. The Detroit Red Wings broke out over the second half of the game Wednesday night and left plenty of people upset as the Stars went from leading 7-1 to losing the game 7-3.
Tonight Dallas hosts the 2nd best team in the west in the Vancouver Canucks and with a win could jump from 3rd back into 2nd. But it will not be an easy win at all and the Stars need to get out onto the ice with a fire going early. The Canucks come in with a record of 8-0-2 over their last 10 games and are threatening the Red Wings for best in the west with impressive play all throughout their game. The Stars are still 12-4-3 over their last 19 and have been good for the month, but over the last week or so the Stars have been looking flat and starting to slip back into some bad habits. Then it looked great through the first half of the game Wednesday, only to falter and then just have everything snowball out of control.
The Stars need a win tonight. To regain some ground in the west. To get things back on track. To leave this year and it’s improvement on a positive note. But also to show a big sellout crowd that this team can compete against the top level teams. They need to show that this team, despite being restricted by their financial situation at the moment, is still able to win. This team has shown this year that it has heart, leadership, and the ability to fight in games no matter the situation. Tonight they just need one thing – to win.
