At the All-Star break I never thought that we would see the Stars falter so heavily all at once. 3rd in the conference, first in the division; at one point they briefly held a 10 point coushin on the rest of the Pacific Division. But thanks to a abysmal slump and the rest of the division finding their stride; the Stars now sit in 8th place – right on the cusp of being out of the playoff window.
I dare say the next game is a must-win. Something I haven’t been able to fully devote myself to yet this season. The Kings are biting on the heals of our boys, one win and they can overtake the spot and push the team down below the threshold that the Stars were so far from for most of the season. The good news is, the Kings don’t play until Wednesday and the Stars play the Devils on Tuesday. After that they have a game every other day for a while which could give them the ability to come back strong if they play well and get some bodies back in the line-up. The Devils are playing amazingly, but they are beatable – but it doesn’t get easier from there. Following that up with Detroit and the Predators, we have some conference battles against strong teams that we need points against to stay in contention.
More good news could come in the form of Grossman coming back in the next game or two (as they sent Trevor Ludwig back down). This should help, but I’m not sure any of the injured players are as important right now as Burish. Don’t get me wrong, Richards is a machine and overall a much more important player. But Burish is the heart and right now the team lacks that the most. They look beaten for 2 our of 3 periods in most of the games during this slump and it isn’t going to get better until we get some faculty back on the ice.
They NEED this next win. If they lose, rest assured they will no longer be jostling for the rest of the season. They will be chasing…
