For any serious NHL fan at all or just knowledgeable hockey fans, we all know that today is the NHL trade deadline. Happens every year, and it seems like a frantic day covered with rumors, actual deals, and way too many people on the edge of their seats. For Dallas Stars fans, building up to this day has been a rollercoaster of possibilities and horrors.
Stars fans have dealt with rumors and speculation around the team’s best player in Brad Richards for months. Toronto wants him, New York covets him, and the Kings have showed interest. But in the end, Brad is still in Dallas and we are past the 2pm CST. It appears that GM Joe Nieuwendyk was never close to trading Richards as he never approached him with a deal or asked him about his NTC by what multiple sources have said. In the end, many teams like Brad and want him, but nothing really blew Joe away and his first option overall was to keep Richards and work on resigning him. So Stars fans got their wish and I definitely agree that this is the best thing for the team.
Unless the package coming back was really nice, the Stars have a good team and keeping Richards is the best thing for the team. Joe improved the defense and puck moving ability on the back-end last week by bringing in Goligoski, and for the team to compete they need Richards. Ribeiro is not a top line center. While this team has plenty of forwards and youth at the position, Richards is the catalyst to this offense and this team. And why would someone want to buy a team without their best player? Having a stud player with this offense to lead it and the powerplay will continue to allow the Stars to be a hopeful contender, and of course with new ownership hopefully there could be a little more improvement to the defense.
Even better, it looks like Richards could be back in the lineup this weekend or early next week. So Brad is staying and he should be back within the next 6-7 days? Sounds like a great day for Stars fans indeed!
