The Dallas Stars are in the playoff hunt, practically every team in the Western Conference with a few exceptions are as well. With less than a month and a half to go I am interested in determining for myself what a reasonable expectation for this year’s club is. Is this a team who can win the cup, or should we just be happy with a playoff berth?
If Richards and Grossman are both close to coming back the Stars have all the weapons afforded to them this season. We have seen this team go on serious tears and a slump or two. If we write the month of February off due to injuries, shouldn’t this be a cup contender? With everyone back this team should have all the pieces, we picked up a puck moving defenseman before the trade deadline and have weapons to work with. Jamie Benn is back and healthy and quickly returning to form and as Brian mentioned in an earlier post Adam Burish is quite possibly the heart of the team.
Assuming everyone is healthy and happy, what makes this a successful season? For me it starts with a playoff berth and at least one series win. This month is a huge benchmark for the season and Monday’s game in particular against Los Angeles will tell us a lot about this team. I said very early on that this team had a Texas Rangers feel to it and I hope that still rings true. I would definitely be happy with a Stanley Cup Final appearance no matter what the outcome.
Feel free to comment with your thoughts on what would be a successful season to you, we all want the Stars to win the cup, but what could you settle with and still call it a good year?
