The Warm-ups: Stars vs. Sharks

You can’t help but look at Sunday’s early game and think, “Brad Richards needs to do more”.

Or at least I can’t. Maybe we’re all spoiled by what he seems to do every night, but the breakaway goal (while great) just wasn’t in Brad Richards fashion. He didn’t create a whole lot, which is what we need from him. Sure, it was the gasoline that got the Stars going and back into the game, but we may not have been behind if he was making the plays we’re used to him making. With a few games under his belt, I am hoping to see the Richards emerge that we were seeing before the concussion (I said it… CONCUSSION).

The Sharks are playing well as they have been for the last half of the season. However they are faltering in the wake of some hungry teams wanting to gain points from the division leading teal warriors. The Stars are going to have to come out shooting and try to get the first goal on the Sharks to take a lead into the locker room after the first, because you can only pull out so many come from behind miracles (as we saw on Sunday against the Kings) before falling behind every game starts to bite you back. As dramatic and nourishing as it feels to come back from a 3 goal deficit, I’d rather just win like we did against Minnesota.

Benn has a chance to get back on his horse after going without a goal on Sunday and if we can get Richards going again this should be a very winable game. It’s a matter of whether those two stars (get it?) align.

Can the Stars get over the loss against the Kings and keep themselves competitive in the Division going into the game against Chicago on Thursday or this be a bloody Tuesday? I guess we’ll see at 7:30pm, but I think we all hope so considering how many teams have squeezed out wins and put themselves between the Stars and first place as the Stars have managed to fall from 4th to 7th with just one loss and one day off. Beating a dead horse, I know… but the Western Conference is too tight to lose too many in a row, so the Stars really need a win in order to keep away from a 9th place Nashville team who is just 2 points away from tying the Stars. Not to mention Calgary in 8th and Anaheim just 2 points from causing havok in the top 8.

But, I didn’t need to tell you that did I?
