Draft Prospects: Part One

Let’s start looking at some of the prospects that the Dallas Stars could be looking at for the upcoming NHL draft next month. I will start off with a pair of defensemen that should both go somewhere in the 10-20th picks.

Duncan Siemens (D, 6’3″ , 192 Ibs) : Why should the Stars be looking at Siemens? Well besides the fact that he is considered by many to be one of the top 5-6 blueliners in the draft, look at his size as of right now. He has good size, is strong, and everyone agrees that he has a great physical game. So wait, he is exactly what the Stars need right now? Along with that one of the things that has helped him rise up the draft boards is that he has good mobility and some offensive upside over other defensive Dmen in the draft. He is not going to be great offensively, but he can skate, check, play great D, and has some size? Heck yes the Stars should take him. The thing is, he may be off the board by the time the Stars draft at 14th. In mock drafts I have seen him go anywhere from 7th to 15th, and most have him going around 11th. But if by any chance he slids to when Joe and the boys draft, I will murder someone if they do not take him.

Jamieson Oleksiak (D, 6’7″ , 244 Ibs) : Why should the Stars look at this kid? Why not?!?! Did you see those stats? Jamieson’s size immediately makes you wonder if he could be the next Zdeno Chara or maybe even Myers from the Sabres. An 18 year-old with that sort of frame already that he will be filling into is going to draw a lot of interest, and he has so far. The question now is where does he get taken. Some have him going in the first half of the teens right around where Siemens will probably go, while others do not see him going until the early 20s. The main issue is that he is a very raw prospect, and some are concerned that his big size and strength have some over-valuing him overall and that he might not really develop into anything more then a big body that won’t ever be a top blueliner. But the “raw” label, the size, and the fact that he is just getting started with his growth curve and potential. If the Stars really look at him and think they see something, then I would be more then fine with them taking him at 14th.

Monday evening I will have a couple of more prospects up for consideration, and then Wednesday I will look at a couple of forwards that the Stars might look at if most of these defensemen are gone when they come up.
