With the 14th pick in the Fansided NHL mock draft, the Dallas Stars have taken defenseman Nathan Beaulieu from Saint John in the QMJHL. As I previewed the pick yesterday (story here), the Stars came up to the podium at the 14th pick with a chance to take a player that I did not think would be on the board.
While the debate would be between Beaulieu and Oscar Klefbom if this happens, it looks like most of you agreed with me. The poll resulted in a 12-2 landslide in favor of Beaulieu. While Klefbom has been one of the risers on draft boards because of a great showing in international play this year and he might be a more well-rounded player, I think he is getting rated higher then he should and he will take a few years to develop probably. Young Nathan on the other hand? He is a top 10-12 player in this draft and what he brings to the table the Stars could use. He is smart and skilled with the puck, can pass and shoot very effectively, and is a great skater. While he might not have the physical side that the Stars really need, he is a smart kid and looks like a future powerplay QB. He had an amazing season this year with the Saint John Sea Dogs, putting up 45 points (12G, 33A) and a +44 rating. He says his favorite player and guy he wants to model himself after is Drew Doughty and that sounds great to me. If he is there on the board, Dallas really could use him and should take him.
The Too Many Men write up and reaction is up (story here), along with the full list of picks so far and their preview of the New York Rangers.
