You Make The Pick: Stars at 14th

With the 2011 NHL Entry Draft taking place Friday, of course focus of the hockey world this week is on the draft. Mock drafts are running rampant and of course there is plenty of speculation on draft day trades. While many of the Stars loyal fans hold their collective breath and hope that the Stars can somehow move Brad Richards for some sort of return, we should realize that it most likely will not happen.

So onto the draft. The Stars have the 14th overall pick in the first round of the draft, and of course there has been some speculation about who Dallas should take. I profiled some defensemen a couple of weeks ago, and feel strongly that unless there is a stud that slips down the board, that the Stars should go after a blueliner. But let’s take a minute and play a little game. Say for a second that you had the pick to make. That you were Joe Nieuwendyk and had the ability to pick who you wanted. Who would you pick for the Dallas Stars?

Maybe Duncan Siemens, the 6’3″ blueliner that possesses size at a young age, a solid physical game, the ability to be a great two-way D-man, and plenty of potential. But Siemens will probably go off the board between 9th-12th. Say he slides down though, should the Stars take him? There is also Nathan Beaulieu. The offensive blueliner has shown great potential, on-ice vision, skating abilities, and is some size. Beaulieu is another guy that could be off the board by the time the Stars take the podium at 14th, but quite a few mock drafts have him falling to the 10-14th range. Some mock drafts and experts have linked Joel Armia to the Stars. Armia is a budding young winger. At 6’3″ and 190 lbs at only 18, he has been spoken of as a nice young power forward. He has shown the ability to score and provide offense at a high level already, and provides an amazing right-handed shot. But he has to continue to grow and has a major weakness in his defensive game.

So who should the Stars take? Say that from the list of guys below, that all of them are available and you get to pick one for the Dallas Stars franchise. You make the pick:
