Countdown to Free Agency

It’s not news that Richards will not be a Star next year, however there is plenty of free agency speculation surrounding all 30 teams (pretty much…) just as there is every year on July 1st.

I find myself more excited for hockey free agency this time of year than our nation’s independance day.  Does that mean I get automatic dual-citizenship as an official Canadian?  Who knows, I’m not a lawyer, bro.

Sadly, not many rumors link any of the few defensemen left to the Stars, while a few people think we’ll see depth forwards come our way and more than a few sources think Connolly will be donning the black here in big D.

Assuming Stamkos resigns with the Lightning, it can be argued that potential-wise Connolly is the next best thing (minus Richards) on the market this year.  He’d be a good fit, though a gamble for any team given his injuries.  He’s got talent to spare, but its hard to see through the veil of seasons in which he played fewer than 70 games.

Certainly no stranger to our top player being out for a chunk of the season, Joe may be willing to take that gamble assuming he thinks that even with an injury he can put numbers up on the days he isn’t broken.

I actually root for this despite his in ability to man-up.  You also have Leino and Gagne to look at, but something tells me that Joe is nuts enough to go after Burgenheim based off of a single season of playoffs…

Who should Joe pick up this off-season?  We’ll find out if you’re right or wrong at 12pm ET.  In the mean time, follow my personal Twitter at www.twitter.com/brianlikesithot as I’ll be tweeting the action all day today as I find it.  Be lazy and let me do the work!
