As always in sports and the media/blogging circles around it, there will be rumors and speculation for just about every professional sports franchise. The Dallas Stars dealt with it abundantly last season as their wasn’t a period of more then a couple of days without someone “reporting” or speculating something about Brad Richards and his future. Dallas also dealt with a lot of rumors surrounding Mike Ribeiro last offseason and even during the year. Well this week there has been a new batch of rumors surrounding Ribs.
A couple of twitter sources (one some-what reliable, a couple others not so much) began stating that the Nashville Predators and Phoenix Coyotes both are looking for serious center/offensive help and are looking to acquire a top center. Ribeiro is apparently on both of their wishlists and there has at least been some communication between the teams and the Stars. While I highly doubt GM Joe would deal Ribs right after the departure of Richards, it is interesting to here the rumors. Nashville has a great pipeline of prospects and young players that would easily interest me if they really wanted to get serious, but I doubt they would move any of the 5-6 names that I’d love to see come to Dallas. Phoenix on the other hand makes very little sense as far as for the Stars. Phoenix and Dallas right now both look to be in the bottom half of the conference and will be scrapping for a playoff spot against each other most likely. Dallas lost their top offensive player, PHX lost the goalie that has carried them the last few years. I wouldn’t pull a trade with a divisional rival who A) I’m more then likely going to be fighting with for points all season, B) Will then be led by the star player you’d be giving up, and C) I just don’t like.
But a new development might have changed the whole situation. Yesterday the Stars again were out skating as now most of the team has returned to Dallas in the last week to begin preparing as a team for the new season. Well Mark over at ESPN Dallas provided us with some info and videos from the day, and something I had heard about yesterday morning was true. Mike Ribeiro played in goal. Strapped on some big pillows and a mask, and he got after it. Here is the video if you have not seen it yet:
So what do you think Phoenix would give now? Star center for their powerplay, and he can play goalie so they don’t have to just rely on Mike Smith. We could aim for the stars, go after whatever we want right? Thanks for your time Ribs, but now you just made your value sky-rocket and I anticipate Phoenix is frantically trying to convince GM Joe to trade him. Go for it all Joe, take everything you can get!
