Traverse Tournament Watch: Stars trounce Canes 8-2
Every year before the start of the pre-season the prospects from several NHL teams get together in Traverse City, Michigan and have a round-robin style tournament.
The Stars take part in this tournament and even won the whole thing 2 years ago. Today marked the Stars return to the tournament as they went up against the prospects from the Carolina Hurricanes in their first game of the tournament. The Stars got off to a hot start taking a 4-0 lead over the Hurricanes on the back of Matt Frasier who scored a hat trick in the game, two of which came in that first period. The game ended in an 8-2 trouncing of the Canes.
This years first round pick Jamie Oleksiak also picked up a goal and late bloomer Brenden Dillon picked up 2 assists and had a +5 for the game. Oleksiak is also writing a blog during his time in the tournament over on NHL.com; you can find that blog here. Tyler Beskorowany had the start in goal while touted prospect Jack Campbell is expected in goal for tomorrow’s game against the New York Rangers prospects.
Over all the game was a featurette of the top lines ability as the Ritchie-Glennie-Frasier line controlled play everytime their skates hit the ice and produced at a phenominal rate with Frasier’s hat trick coming on the back of Glennie and Ritchie who both had 3 assists a piece. Below is a video of Frasiers first goal off of a nice back hand shot that was set up by Glennie forcing a turn over in the neutral zone and Ritchie making a nice pass to set up the move and the goal. Below that is teh box-score.
Tomorrow’s game will be aired twice on the NHL Network at 6/5pm Central and then replayed at 9/8pm Central as they look to feature the Rangers who got a whole lot more popular with the Richards signing this off-season. The Rangers prospect team played and beat the St. Louis team by a 5-2 margin so someone’s unbeaten 1-0 record has to go!
