When you pick a captain in the NHL, you want a leader and someone who will score important goals at the right time. Someone who will speak at the right moment when the team is in need of motivation. When the Dallas Stars named Brenden Morrow captain of the team, they found their leader. They wanted a change in the guard and felt that he was the right choice. Many of his teammates and coaches admired his dedication to the team and believed he was the ideal choice to be the leader of this team.
Entering his 12 year in the NHL, Morrow has been with the team since the 1999 and last year, he had 33 goals and 23 assists for 56 points in 82 games. This year he will be looked upon to put up similar results with Brad Richards leaving the Stars for the New York Rangers in the summer. Morrow does possess the knack to score important goals and has that ability to lead in big games. He brings the elements that every strong captain should possess. He can score big goals. He can hit. He can fight if need be and he can celebrate just as hard as when a teammate scores a big goal.
The biggest question coming into the 2011-2012 season was if he could step-up again and help the Dallas Stars make a return to the playoffs this year? I believe he can because he has that ability to lead and do whatever it takes. He has to prove to the critics how valuable he is to the Dallas Stars and that he can produce when they need it the most. He will play through pain and keep playing until someone stops him. Last year in a game against the San Jose Sharks, he came back in the game despite breaking his nose and hadsurgery the next day to repair it. After that some thought he wasn’t going to play right after, but Morrow played the next game and led the team onto the ice.
A leader is someone who will show his team when the game is on the rocks and play is not going there way, that they play through it and he will lead his teammates no matter the situation. He is also there to motivate his team when they are down. He is there when the times are great and the team is winning. Those examples proves to me why Brenden Morrow is the heart beat of the Dallas Stars. While the last few years for him have been a rollercoaster, he has that ability to change the game and lead the Dallas Stars to the playoffs, and ultimately I think to win Lord Stanley’s Cup.
