The Dallas Stars will look to build off their New Year’s Eve win against the defending champion Boston Bruins as they host the hated Detroit Red Wings tonight in downtown Dallas. After playing one of their worst games of the season against the Blue Jackets last Thursday, the Stars responded with one of their best efforts in front of a sold out crowd on Saturday. But the Stars will have to start 2012 without a few defensemen.
Sheldon Souray, Stephane Robidas, and rookie Philip Larsen will all be out of the lineup tonight, leading to Jordie Benn being in the lineup tonight. The elder Benn will see his first NHL action after playing well for the Texas Stars for the last season and a half. While Jamie Benn has become one of the biggest names for the Stars at a young age, Jordie has had a tougher time making a name for himself until recently. But this season he is tied for the lead in scoring by defensemen in the AHL and has really started to surprise as a possible late bloomer that just need a couple of extra years playing in lower levels. Brenden Dillion was also called up from Austin because of the injuries, but he is expected to be a healthy scratch.
The puck will drop at 7pm because of the game being broadcast for NBC Sports (formerly Versus). Expect Kari Lehtonen to get the start again tonight and for the lineup to be about the same as Saturday’s with Jordie taking Larsen’s spot. Hopefully the Stars can avenge the 5-2 loss that the Red Wings delivered the last time these two teams played in Detroit.
