With less than a week to go before the trade deadline, things have begun to pick up on the rumor mill. ESPN writer Pierre LeBrun posted an article today about how Stars forwards Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro could be traded by the deadline as Joe Nieuwendyk begins to look towards the big picture. With the recent struggles of Dallas to string together wins in the ever-tightening Western Conference playoff race, the rumors should not be at all unexpected. Nieuwendyk has said that he would be active at the deadline and would listen to offers, and with contenders looking to add some final pieces, players like Ott and Ribeiro could be very attractive.
The article includes quotes from both Ott and Ribiero about the possibility of being traded:
“I’ve been with the Stars since I was drafted. When your name gets mentioned in the rumors, it gets to you a little and you think about it. But truthfully, I do take it as a huge compliment. Obviously if there’s playoff contending teams that think I’m a puzzle piece, I take that as a compliment. But I want to stay here. I want to be part of the solution. But I can only control what I can control.” – Steve Ott
“If I’m traded, I’m traded, not much I can do about it,” Ribeiro said Tuesday. “Obviously I’d like to be here with the Stars. I want to re-sign here and stay with Dallas for the rest of my career. But you can’t control that. There’s a few more days and we’ll see after the 27th if I’m still here.” - Mike Ribeiro
The next week is going to be very interesting for Stars fans. The team is desperate to put together a solid streak and with the Ducks right behind the Stars, the race is only getting more crowded. It’s crunch time, starting tonight against the Montreal Canadiens.
