Dallas, Texas–The good news during the Stars game was the announcement of Jamie Benn, who signed to five-year, $26.25 million dollar contract that was announced during the game. The bad news was that too many undisciplined penalties and turnovers cost the Dallas Stars’ their second loss in OT as Marian Hossa scored the game winning goal. They were coming off a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Loui Eriksson and Ray Whitney scored for the Stars. Kari Lehtonen stopped 38 of 41 shots.
Marian Hossa, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane scored in their fourth win of the season, their best start since the 1972-73 season. Corey Crawford stopped 21 of 23 shots.
1st Period
The Chicago Blackhawks came out in the first period, outshooting and outplaying the Dallas Stars but Kari Lehtonen who started in net was great for the Dallas Stars. He made a great stop with the glove as Jonathan Toews was on the breakaway at the 7:06 mark.
Jaromir Jagr almost made it 1-0 with a deflected shot but Crawford came up big with the pad save at the 8:36 mark. With less than a minute before the period ended, Loui Eriksson with his second goal of the season on a breakaway, with less than a minute on the penalty kill, made it 1-0.
2nd Period
Corey Crawford stopped Ryan Garbutt on the penalty shot after Brent Seabrook hooked him at the 16:27 mark as he couldn’t elevate the puck. Lehtonen with consist pad saves on Brandon Saad and Patrick Kane as the Stars were scrambling to get the puck out of the zone. Ray Whitney with a backhanded goal from a beautiful pass by Cody Eakin at the 9:19 mark, that made it 2-0. That was Whitney’s 2nd goal of the season.
Blackhawks made it 2-1 as Patrick Sharp with a fluke goal as Daley tapped the puck in the net scored on the power play at the 4:03 mark. That was Sharp’s 2nd goal of the season.
3rd Period
Lehtonen came up big for the Dallas Stars when they were down a man as he made a few beautiful stops with the glove and pad to keep the game at 2-1 Stars. Hawks tied the game up at 2-2 from a power play goal by Jonathan Toews with a beauty of a wrist goal past Lehtonen’s blocker side at the 14:07 mark.
Overtime
Marian Hossa scored the game winning goal on the power play after Morrow went to the box for intereference at the 3:19 mark in OT. That was Hossa’s 5th goal of the season.
The Blackhawks return home to host Detroit on Friday night. The Stars host St. Louis on Saturday.
