Erik Cole does give the Stars a big net presence as he drives the net and under contract for two years while Ryder was going to be a UFA after the season. With more about the trade deadline, here’s the press release from the Dallas Stars:
Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club has acquired forward Erik Cole from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forward Michael Ryder and Dallas’ third-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
Cole, 34, won a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, and has 457 points (222G-235A) in 721 career NHL games. Last season, he led Montreal in goal scoring with 35 goals, and was second on the team with 61 points (35G-26A). A consistent offensive threat, Cole has earned 50-point seasons in five of his previous seven campaigns, including two 60-point seasons with Montreal (2011-12) and Carolina (2006-07). The 6-foot-2, 212-pound forward has also appeared in 43 playoff contests, posting 14 points (6G-8A), including one game-winning goal.
“Erik Cole is a top-six, power forward who skates well, adds size, and is under contract for the next two years,” said Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk. “We thank Michael Ryder for his contributions and look forward to what Erik will bring to our group.”
A native of Oswego, New York, Cole competed at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, where he posted one goal and two assists in six contests at the tournament. He has also competed at the 2005 and 2007 World Championships, earning 11 points (2G-9A) in 14 games for Team USA.
Ryder, 32, returns to Montreal after playing the last two seasons with Dallas and the previous three with Boston. This season, he has 14 points (6G-8A) in 19 games for the Stars. The native of Bonavista, Newfoundland was signed by Dallas as a free agent to a two-year contract on July 1, 2011 and was Montreal’s eighth-round selection (216th overall) in 1998.
