Texas Stars squeeze out win over Rochester Americans, reclaim AHL lead

With only 12 games remaining in the regular season, the Texas Stars pulled off a close 2-1 victory over the Rochester Americans. The win pushed the Stars back into first place in the AHL.

Back on the roster for the Texas Stars was Jamie “Big Rig” Oleksiak, who played the past month with the Dallas Stars, starting with the February 25, 5-4 loss to the Nashville Predators.

The Stars kicked off scoring in Friday night’s match, with Scott Glennie sliding one past Rochester goalie David Leggio just three minutes into the game. With only seconds remaining in the period, and while the Stars were on the power play, American’s forward Mark Mancari threw a shot on goal that just missed goalie Richard Bachman’s glove.

Halfway through the second period, the Stars reclaimed the lead when Luke Gazdic deflected a powerful slap shot from William Wrenn. It seemed the Stars would extend the lead further, with scoring opportunities in both even-strength and power play situations, including a 5-on-3 during the second period. The Stars were 0-4 while on the power play.

Rochester pushed hard to tie the game in the third period, including taking advantage of a power play that almost produced a goal, but Bachman ref

used to slack off in the crease. In impressive style, Bachman denied Rochester’s Zemgus Girgensons a one-on-one opportunity, holding the Stars in the lead with only minutes remaining in the game.

In total, Bachman faced 12 shots in the third period and 30 total in the game, while Leggio faced 41.

The Stars will face the Charlotte Checkers to conclude a three-game home stand tonight. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Cedar Park Center.
