In the first round the Tornado selected Defenseman Chris Leibinger with the seventeenth overall pick. The 5’ 9” – 170 pound native of Saginaw, MI has seen playing time in the NAHL playing two seasons for the Traverse City North Stars in 2010 – 12. In 96 NAHL games Leibinger put up 26 points on 7G – 19A to go along with 107 PIMs. Chris played three games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL during the 2011/12 season before starting the 2012/13 season with Muskegon. He logged 32 games in a Lumberjacks sweater scoring 4G – 6A and was then traded to the Waterloo Black Hawks where he added another 7A in 20 games played.
With the 42nd overall pick, Texas took another blueliner in the second round. The Tornado turned to the EJHL Florida Eels to select Joey Colatarci. Tornado Head Coach Tony Curtale should have a very good read on Colatarci as former Tornado Assistant Coach Jason Bloomingburg is now behind the Eel’s bench. Colatarci was selected to the EJHL South All-Star Team this past season. At 6’ 1” – 180, Joey brings a physical presence to go along with an offensive touch. In 72 games with Florida over the past two seasons the Fort Myers, FL native has registered 50 points on 11G – 39A and 152 PIMs. 25 of Colatarci’s 50 points came on the power play.
The Tornado did not have picks in the third or fourth rounds, but picked their first Forward with the 114th overall pick in the fifth round with the selection of Bryan Basilico. Basilico who calls Rochester, MI home stands 6’ 3” and weighs 194. Basilico has spent time with Belle Tire U16 and Honeybaked U18 teams over the past few seasons. Bryan played a total of 82 games at the Midget level with 20G – 36A. He played six USHL games with the Sioux Falls Stampede late in the 2011/12 season and then had brief stints with the Des Moines Buccaneers and Green Bay Gamblers during 2012/13. In total Basilico has logged 21 games in the USHL registering 2A.
Texas added a second Russian skater to their protected list in the sixth round with the selection on Igor Vladykovskiy from the Honeybaked U18 team. The 6’ 2” – 200 Forward played 23 games during the 2012/13 season scoring 9 points on 3G – 6A.
The Tornado’s final pick came in the seventh round with the 150 overall pick. Texas took Forward Ryan Cusin of Victory Honda U18. The 5’ 7” – 165 native of Westland, MI totaled 28 points in 41 games on 14G – 14A.
