Things definitely heated up over the past few days for the Stars, and though the attention may be unwanted and undeserved, it’s certainly putting a team that’s been pushing for the limelight throughout the off-season in that exact position.
The rumors about Evgeni Malkin began swirling two days ago when his father announced to the Russian media the current Pittsburgh Penguin had been extended an offer by Dallas; a big time no-no in the league. Don’t get too excited about it though, not only are the Stars denying the claim, Malkin doesn’t sound like he’d be hopping jovially on a plane this direction.
Heating up a little closer to home is the Stars’ lineup, which was sure to change with the dramatic off-season roster changes. But would you’ve predicted Dan Ellis to back up Kari Lehtonen in place of Cristopher Nilstorp, who has spent time backing up the Big Fin already, or that Valeri Nichushkin could kick off the year with a nine-game trial run in Dallas gear already?
Though not as hot a topic as earlier this season, the topic of Tyler Seguin is far from being cold as ice. He has certainly ruffled some feathers, both in Dallas and in Boston, but there’s a lot of potential for the veterans of his new team to bring him up to par in maturity, if that journey hasn’t already begun. But nothing’s going to shift those upturned noses downward like a strong performance out of the gate.
