Last season was a surprising year on the Stars roster when it comes to assists. Defenseman Alex Goligoski led the pack with 24 with Jamie Benn bringing coming in three shy of the leader. Since joining the Stars in February 2010, the 28-year-old has closed out two of the three seasons in the team’s top-ten in assists. The year he fell short, he was 11th on the list.
Perhaps the more obvious of the “old-timers” on the Dallas roster would be Jamie Benn. Though he fell behind Goligoski last season, Benn missed out on the first five games of the season because of contract negotiations and customs complications returning from Canada. More impressively, Benn has broken the top-five in assists since joining the Stars in 2010. In his first year with Dallas, the only year he didn’t break the top-five, he sat in the top ten.
New D-Man Sergei Gonchar is also quite familiar with feeding the puck, and led the Ottawa Senators in assist in the 2012-2013 season, tied with Goligoski at 24. Like Benn, Gonchar has also broken the top-five assist leaders since joining the Senators in 2010. In his five years prior, spent with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he again broke the top-five in assists every year with one exception: In the pre-season of 2008, Gonchar took a hard hit in a pre-season game against Tampa Bay that resulted in a dislocated shoulder and 21 weeks on injured reserve.
