The Daily Hat Trick

With just a little over a week until the season starts, the Stars are working diligently to put together a team that will prove to be a significant competitor in the realigned and revamped NHL. Lines continue to be worked on and given a final touch of finesse, while individuals try to push themselves into the limelight. Dive a little deeper in today’s Daily Hat Trick.

Perhaps the biggest names of the off season, Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, continue to pop up in news headlines throughout hockey media. Previously, the pair was noted to be the team’s most anticipated scoring duo, and the move of Benn to wing and Seguin situated at center just about tops hockey water cooler talk. Now, the Stars are looking to make the duo even more dangerous as penalty killers.

The Stars 2013 first round draft pick, 18-year-old Russian Valeri Nichushkin, has been on an upward path of success since his selection by the organization back in June. Nichushkin is currently tied with Antoine Roussel and Jamie Benn for the team’s leading goal-scorer of the preseason, and he appears to be growing increasingly comfortable alongside fellow Stars. His acclimation to the “American way” hasn’t ended on the ice though, and “Val” as his host family calls him, is quickly learning about what a life here in Texas, and the U.S. has to offer.

Defense has been a sore spot for Dallas for years, and with the acquisition of Sergei Gonchar in the offseason, it appeared the team’s D may start to see an impressive upswing in performance. But now it appears the team may be short yet another D-man when the season kicks off next week. Aaron Rome is still out after healing from hip surgery this summer, and an upper body injury in last week’s game against Florida may have Trevor Daley out for the beginning of the season also.
