Tornado Alumni Named To 2013 U.S. National University Team

Two NAHL and Texas Tornado alumni have been selected to represent the U.S.A. in the 2013 Winter World University Games to be held in Trentino, Italy.

Forward Nick Taurence who played with the Tornado in 2009/10 will join the team from Eastern Michigan University. Taurence is a 5’ 10”, 180 pound senior from Trenton, MI. With the Tornado in 2009/10 Nick logged 7G – 10A for 18 points in 27 games played. Last season as a junior, Taurence put up some impressive numbers racking up 68 points on 23G – 45A. So far this season he has 17 points with 3G – 14A in 14 games played.

Eastern Michigan Head Coach Kevin Gee said of Taurence,” He’s a great kid; you know what you’re going to get every night. He loves hockey and always has a smile on his face. I’m extremely happy that he gets to experience international hockey.”

” It’s an amazing honor. I’m so excited to represent EMU and Team USA.” Taurence told Gary Cekus for Eagles Hockey. ” I’m so thankful for my teammates and grateful to my coach for helping me reach this goal. I hope it helps our program generate the attention we deserve at EMU and in the ACHA. I’m going to represent us as best I can.”

Joining Taurence will be Alex Temby who played parts of the 2011/12 and 20012/13 season with the Tornado before being shelved by a season ending injury. The 6’ 0”, 190 pound native of Littleton, CO is a freshman at the University of Arizona. With the Tornado Temby played in 57 games over the two seasons scoring 21 points on 5G – 16A. In 13 games played with Arizona State this season he has chipped in 2G – 8A.

Sun Devils Head Coach Greg Powers was very excited to land Temby.  “Alex was a huge get for us,” Powers said. “He will be a stand-out defenseman for us for four years. Players with his ability coupled with tremendous character and leadership ability do not come around often. We are very fortunate he chose to be a Sun Devil.”

Ever humble, Alex told Sundevilhockey.com “It’s a huge honor to be representing Team USA and Arizona State University. I owe it to the team, teammates and coaching staff … it’s a big honor.”
