In Ray Whitney’s report card, I said that the Stars should be looking to cut ties with Ray and go their separate ways.
Whitney had a less than memorable season. Aside from a 13 game injury, he finished the regular season with 9 goals and 23 assists. His season consisted of falling from the 1st and 2nd lines to the 4th line and power play set. He produced not a single number in the playoffs, which means 0 goals and 0 assists
At the age of 42, Whitney is going to have some trouble finding a team unless one is in dire need of an offensive minded right wing in order to qualify for a Cup run. The Stars current contract with Whitney expires June 30th and he will be a UFA come July 1st. So he will have the freedom to do as he pleases. He stated in a recent interview that his strength and legs are still there and ready for action, but that it was hard to ever get them moving in the past season when he was playing an average of 8 or 9 minutes a game plus limited power play time. He implied that the Stars are holding him back from giving his 100% and that could possibly mean that he will not even give the Stars a chance in the offseason. and they might end up not giving him a chance either. I’m not sure how Jim Nill is thinking right now, but unless he is focused on a full ride to the Cup this season, Whitney might not be receiving any sort of offer from the front office.
But he might prove me wrong. He might get a new contract with Dallas and put up stellar numbers next year and be a key factor in the Stars returning to the Cup for the first time in 16 years. Who knows? Nobody just yet. We’ll have to wait until the offseason, which really sucks.
But enough of me babbling on, its YOUR turn to babble! Vote here on how you think the Stars should handle Ray Whitney in the upcoming offseason:
