On Cody Eakin’s report card, I said that Eakin was going to be a reliable leader and playmaker in the seasons to come and that the Stars need to give him a new contract before his RFA status becomes a reality.
And my opinion has not changed.
Cody Eakin, after coming to Dallas before the lockout season in a trade with the Washington Capitals that sent Mike Ribeiro packing, had some big shoes to fill. And he delivered. Eakin skated in 81 of a possible 82 regular season games, the only game he would miss would be where he filled the healthy scratch position. He scored 16 goals in the regular season and tallied 19 assists. He made sure not to disappoint in the playoffs either, netting 2 goals and recording 3 assists in 6 games played. His contract expires on June 30th to which he will become an RFA, which means that he is still part of Stars until other team offers and Stars decline to match the offer.
But Eakin’s biggest surprise was his chemistry that he formed between Ryan Garbutt and Antoine Roussel. Their line (the one I call the Three Musketeers) constantly created problems for the opposing team and always found a way to send the puck to the twine. With Eakin’s puck handling skills, Garbutt’s ability to finish the puck into the net, and Roussel’s ability to use the physical game, their line is locked and loaded every time they step on the ice. Eakin is the glue that holds the line together at the center position. With his precise passing and fantastic faceoff numbers as well, Eakin’s stock is on the rise in the center position and the Stars could use him, whether they find a 2nd line center, in which he could fill the third line spot, or not, in which he would be promoted to second line maybe for good. His services will be a great help in the Stars’ Cup run.
But that’s my opinion. What’s yours? VOTE here on how you feel the Stars should act regarding Cody Eakin’s future in Dallas in the upcoming offseason:
