Brenden Dillon and Dallas Stars Agree on Terms

The Stars have agreed to terms with defenseman Brenden Dillon, according to Mike Heika of The Dallas Morning News. The contract is a one-year deal worth $1.25 million.

This eventual signing should mark the conclusion of all offseason negotiations between the team and last year’s roster, and all but rounds out the roster for opening night. The annual value of the contract is worth less than Cody Eakin’s recent $3.8m two-year deal, somewhat surprising given their relative value to the team. But Dillon has a shot to prove his worth, and he’ll earn the right of arbitration entering next offseason. The message the Stars are sending is this: prove that you’re worth it this year, and you’ll get a nice payday next year.

I, for one, have been on the Dillon bandwagon since he suited up for the big club in 2012-13. He’s a defensive defenseman, capable of putting a body on anyone, disrupting passes and taking smart penalties. While he’s not a known scorer (17 points last season) he’s proven to be versatile and can pair up with just about any other D-man. Plus, he’s scored a Gordie Howe Hat Trick!
