2015 is in the books and 2016 is off and running, and the Dallas Stars remain in the NHL’s driver seat. It’s been an exciting season so far, and here are five things to watch for as they enter the New Year.

The Dallas Stars were unable to ring in the New Year with a two point effort on Saturday night, falling 3-2 in overtime to the New Jersey Devils. After rallying from a 2-0 deficit with less than 10 minutes to go in the game, the Stars could not clear the puck the one extra time they needed it on the penalty kill in OT and ended up sacrificing a point for it.

The Columbus Blue Jackets came to the rescue, though. After dealing Dallas an ugly 6-3 loss last Tuesday night, they managed to beat the Washington Capitals in a shootout to keep the Stars atop the NHL. The Stars (28-9-4) now have 60 points, while the Capitals (28-7-3) sit in second with 59.

But Sunday afternoon, the Stars could not stop the bleeding. They fell behind to the New York Islanders and never found a way to even the score. They lost 6-5 and dropped their second straight game for the first time this season.

Even with the OT loss, the Dallas Stars have nothing to hang their heads about. Their start to the 2015-2016 season has been amazing. Since October 8th, 2015, the Stars have witnessed their best start in franchise history, and currently sit in the driver seat of the Western Conference and, more importantly, the NHL as a whole.

It’s been a three-sided effort, from the near-unstoppable offense, to the much-improved defense, and finally with the efficient goaltending tandem. But all of the pieces quickly and effectively shuffled into place, and the Stars are thriving as a result.

That being said, the 2016 year is now upon them. Will the Dallas Stars be able to keep up the intensity and success? What will happen in the offseason? Are they set up to repeat their hot streak come next season?

Here are five of the biggest things to watch for as 2016 kicks off in regards to the Stars organization. Grab your popcorn, because it will be an intriguing and action-packed ride.
