The Dallas Stars entered Winnipeg on Thursday night looking for their second straight win against the Jets. But the Jets proved to be too much as they downed the Stars 4-1. Post game wrap up can be found below.

It was not an eventful night for the Dallas Stars as they tried to scrape up their fourth win of the season and second against the Jets on Thursday night in Winnipeg.

After stringing together an impressive 3-2 victory against the Jets on Tuesday, the Stars headed for Winnipeg with their sights set on two straight wins. But the boys in navy had different plans as they wore Dallas down in what eventually turned into a 4-1 loss.

Game recap

The first period livened up very quickly after Tyler Myers scored on a slap shot just 15 seconds in. The Jets carried the 1-0 lead and after a mass of power play chances, Kyle Connor scored on a 2-on-1 to make it 2-0 in favor of Winnipeg.

The second period rolled around, and the Jets wasted no time continuing to give the Stars all they had. On their first PP chance of the second, Patrik Laine scored for Winnipeg to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Just 33 seconds into the third period, Tyler Seguin sent a rocket past Connor Hellebuyck to drag the Dallas Stars within two. But more unnecessary penalties put the Stars in a 5-on-3 hole. Laine capitalized on the ensuing power play for his second of the night to give Winnipeg the 4-1 lead. The score would remain the same for the remainder of the game as the Jets went on to win.

Thoughts and Observations

-The Dallas Stars now fall to 3-3-1 on the season and continue their struggle with finding consistency. They have yet to win two games in a row this season and cannot seem to get off the roller coaster of inconsistency that they currently find themselves trapped on.

-The Stars just cannot seem to figure their play out. Sure the injuries are making things hard and forcing some things to come on the fly, but Dallas needs to nail down their style of play or else they will risk falling into mediocrity.

-Just two nights ago, the Dallas Stars put in a solid effort against the same team they played tonight. They won that game 3-2. Two nights later, nothing changed besides the Jets’ starting goaltender, yet for some reason Dallas never got the ball rolling. Whatever caused them to be so off needs to be fixed quickly.

-Once again, Antti Niemi was given all he could handle. This young Stars defense is really making it difficult on the goaltending. The Jets took 22 shots in the first period alone of tonight’s game, along with 36 for the night. Some perfectly timed saves were the only reason the game did not turn into a blowout.

-The Stars offense was nowhere to be found. Even though they put up 39 shots on net, the majority of them were easily fended off by Hellebuyck. Tyler Seguin put up a strong effort with five shots on goal, but only one found the back of the net.

-All in all, the Stars looked lazy and misconstrued tonight. They were unable to connect on easy passes, missing the net on open chances, and giving up free opportunities on their own net.

-The Jets made an example out of the Stars tonight with their young guns. Hellebuyck stopped 38 of 39, Kyle Connor scored his first career NHL goal, and 2016 second overall pick Patrik Laine nailed down two goals.

-The special teams were an absolute mess. Dallas committed seven penalties throughout the game, which is absolutely unacceptable when trying to win a hockey game. They went 5/7 on the Pk as well as 1/6 on their own power play.

Next: Why The Stars Shouldn't Be Afraid To Get Scrappy

The Dallas Stars will now pack up and continue their journey through the Central Division. Their next matchup is scheduled for Saturday night in Minnesota against the Wild. Let’s hope they are more focused, prepared, and hopefully a tad more healthy before puck drop. Otherwise, they could be in for another long night.
