Dallas Stars Winger Void Could Be Filled by Matej Stransky

Matej Stransky isn’t the first Dallas Stars prospect that comes to mind when you envision the franchise’s bright future, but the powerful winger could potentially make a splash in the NHL very shortly.

For the Dallas Stars, the main pieces of their promising prospect pool have already made their presence in the NHL known, such as lofty righty Brett Ritchie, adaptable Finnish blueliner Esa Lindell, or defensive extraordinaire Radek Faksa.

We’ve watched Devin Shore, Curtis McKenzie, Stephen Johns, and others set their spots in the AAC locker room over the last year, and long-time supporters can recall Jamie Benn, Antoine Roussel, and Cody Eakin do the same through drafting and development.

In turn, for the most part, the American Hockey League well is drying up in terms of prospects ready to turn the Stars around. While former OHL Cup champion Jason Dickinson and the offensively-fluent Julius Honka still hold immense aptitude that can heavily benefit Dallas, other than that, the reservoir is decreasing.

However, one off-the-radar player has the chance to slip a Victory Green jersey on in the 2017-18 season, just ask any hockey-avid Austinite.

More from Prospects

Matej Stransky is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound beast with the size to fend off opposing defenders and the hands to snipe, slip, or sauce his way around goaltenders with savagery style.

A former sixth-round selection (165th overall) to the Dallas Stars in a mostly awry 2011 NHL Draft, Stransky was a relatively unknown pick that many expected to fizzle off, despite his excellence in the Western Hockey League with the Saskatoon Blades.

The native of Ostrava, Czech Republic twice reached 80 points with the Blades, scoring a team-high 39 goals in 2011-12 at just 19 years old.

The case for Matej Stransky on the Dallas Stars is all in theory, but with an impressive season in the AHL unfolding right now in which he boasts a team-high 15 goals and 29 points, the theory is only getting stronger.

As many of the right wingers on the Dallas Stars currently play with expiring contracts (Patrick Eaves, Patrick Sharp, Jiri Hudler, Lauri Korpikoski, Ales Hemsky, Mattias Janmark, Curtis McKenzie, Brett Ritchie, Adam Cracknell) Stransky will hypothetically fill a hole the Stars leave open instantly. At 23 years old with a mix of anything you can ask for, Stransky could be just as, if not more potent than any other free agent option.

He’s a big, physical player with superb edgework and a very valuable right-handed shot, especially with the previously-mentioned expiring contracts featuring right-shooters like Eaves, Hemsky, and Sharp.

Matej Stransky slipping on a Victory Green sweater and skating alongside Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin is his dream, as the 2014 Calder Cup champion would be the first NHL player from Ostrava. But, it very well might be a reality after this season.
