  • Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn:

On the difficulty of picking up points in a back-to-back:

“A back-to-back is no excuse. We had a 1-0 lead after two periods and came out in the third and laid an egg gave up six goals. It’s embarrassing. We left our goalie hanging tonight and he had a really good game.”

On the bleaker playoff hopes now sitting back six points:

“There are still however many games left in the season [22 games] and there are still a lot of points out there. We’re gonna have to figure it out here, dig deep, and really have to grind it out.”

On assessing the team’s inability to close games out:

“The third period was just embarrassing. That’s pretty much it. Especially this time of year when you should be coming together as a group, digging deep, and locking the game down. Instead, we left our goalie hanging.”

Dallas Stars head coach Lindy Ruff:

On giving up the most goals in a period throughout the NHL this season:

“It was embarrassing. We lost some battles, their determination was better than ours, and we let the goals in. We had four guys in front of our net on one goal and that just can’t happen.”

On the play of Jhonas Enroth:

“For me, the second goal was maybe tough enough for that. I don’t know if you can look past that. It was a game that was pretty ugly for 40 minutes with not a lot of chances for either team. We did a pretty good job of limiting their opportunities, but their energy was a lot better than ours in the third.

On the difficulty of the third period after two strong periods:

“It’s hard to take positives. You can take a little bit of positive out of the first forty minutes, but it was hard because we really had no line that was generating anything. I thought our discipline in the game to stay out of the penalty box was good. We got our power play goal and it looked like we were going to get ourselves some points. But it started with the early battles and not getting some pucks out.”

On the losses to San Jose and Minnesota pushing the Stars further down:

“I know how tough it is getting. It’s no secret. We gotta go on a real good run. I mean, it’s still there. But we’ve gotta win some games again. Last night was a tough loss and tonight is even tougher when you’re leading.”

The Dallas Stars are now six points out of a playoff spot and battling five other teams for two spots. The road has shut down, and the Stars will need a miracle to scrap themselves back into the race.
