Dallas Stars Setting Up For Emotional Return To Rich Peverley
The Dallas Stars organization will be airing the show “Playing For Pevs” on Fox Sports Southwest. However much you remember from that night, it promises to be an emotional show.
On March 10, 2014, the Dallas Stars organization experienced something they had never witnessed before and hopefully never will again.
In the middle of the first period in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Rich Peverley collapsed on the Stars bench. After finishing a shift, Peverley slumped over on the bench, spawning some quick movements by the players and medical staff in front of the oblivious fans.
Peverley was quickly revived and rushed to the hospital. After nervously sitting around and worrying, the fans were asked to leave and the game was officially postponed.
After a short stay in the hospital, Peverley was allowed to leave but was shut down from competition for the remainder of the season and postseason. His heart condition had been a worrisome factor the past few years during his NHL playing term, and he had received treatment on it before the Dallas Stars 2013-2014 season began.
The Stars boarded a plane that night and headed for St. Louis where they were scheduled to play a game just 24 hours later. With some rallying together and truly “playing for Pevs,” the Stars fended off the Blues 3-2 in overtime.
After taking the 2014-2015 season off to further treatment and hopefully make a comeback, Peverley announced that he had decided to retire from the game for good. But he did not leave the Dallas Stars organization, and now serves as Player Development Coordinator for the club.
Tonight’s show “Playing For Pevs” will give Stars fans who still may not know all the details of that night an up close and personal look at the traumatic event. They will be given the chance to hear from Peverley, the players, the coaching staff, members of the front office from both the Stars and Blue Jackets, and more regarding all that happened that night.
One of the most frightening events in sporting history will be revisited tonight, and it may an emotional visitation for some. That’s perfectly alright. This one moment not only changed one team, but an entire community and league, for good. So get the tissue boxes ready.
