Dallas Stars Report Cards: Tyler Seguin
Blackout Dallas will spend the next few weeks writing and posting player report cards. Here is the newest one on No. 91, Tyler Seguin.
The Dallas Stars had quite the season in 2015-16 in which they earned the title of Central Division Champions and made it as far as Game 7 of the second round of the playoffs. While their season came to a rather abrupt end, each player had a hand in making the season what it was.
One of those players is Tyler Seguin. Half of the Stars’ dynamic duo serves as one of the most talented and potent offensive players for the organization and this year proved no different.
Coming to Dallas
Seguin became a member of the Dallas Stars in the blockbuster deal of the 2014 summer between the Stars and the Boston Bruins. He was traded, along side Rich Peverley and defenseman Ryan Button, in exchange for Loui Eriksson, Reilly Smith, Joe Morrow and Matt Fraser.
The deal is still talked about to this day, seeing that Seguin was the second overall draft pick in the 2010 draft. He had only played in two and a half seasons with the Bruins before they traded away one of the best young forwards in the league.
Once in Dallas, No. 91 took off. He coupled up with Jamie Benn and created a fantastic pairing that had great chemistry and incredible offensive power. Despite a few injuries, Seguin managed to stay in the line-up and prove that Jim Nill knew what he was doing back in his first offseason with the team.
Regular Season Recap
Seguin dressed for 72 of Dallas’ 82 games during the regular season. He scored 73 points (33G, 40A) for 14th in the league’s scoring race. He had an acceptable plus-minus of plus-2 and took a modest 16 minutes of penalties.
He was eighth in the league in shots taken, ending the season with 278, and he averaged 19:27 of time on ice during the season.
He ended the year with just over a point-per-game average and came in the top 15 in scoring despite missing ten games. Those numbers are something to be proud of, but knowing the bar he sets for himself, Seguin will come out even stronger in the fall.
Overall it was his third best regular season, all of which have been in Dallas, behind last year when he scored 77 points in 71 games and the 2013-14 season in which he totaled 84 points in 81 games.
Playoff Recap
There isn’t much to say about Tyler Seguin in the playoffs as he only played in Game 2 of the first round due to injury. He missed the last few weeks of the regular season with a cut to his Achilles tendon and unfortunately injured his leg again in his 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff debut.
He strained his left calf in the 15 or so minutes of ice time he had in the game and didn’t return for the remainder of Dallas’ bid for the Stanley Cup. He didn’t score any points in the game either.
Contract Situation
The Dallas Stars have Seguin locked down until the 2019-20 season. His cap hit $5.75 million each year from now until the offseason following the 2019 playoffs in which he will be a free agent.
Beginning in 2017-18 Seguin will have a modified no-trade clause that will be part of his contract until it expires. No. 91 will be 27 at that point and if he continues to play as well as he has in his time wearing Victory Green, an extension should already be in place by that point.
Seguin will be expensive, though. The Dallas Stars have to play their cards right if they wish to keep him down the line. They spend much more now than they did when they were forced to require Eric Nystrom to hit the cap floor back in 2011.
Despite his high price tag, No. 91 has shown his abilities and will hopefully be as healthy as possible moving forward.
Bottom Line
Tyler Seguin has been and will continue to be a key to Dallas’ future. He’s a talented player with a lot of success in his rear view and a lot of drive for success in his future.
His performance this season was no different and he’ll be a great contributor moving forward for the Stars. Overall he deserves an A+ for his performance this year, but a C- for luck as two injuries kept him out at a time when the Stars needed him the most.
