This fall will be Jim Nill’s sixth season as the General Manager of the Dallas Stars since taking the job in April 2013. During his five years, he’s made some great moves that have had a positive impact on the team.

Nill’s good decisions have paid off for the Dallas Stars, including trading for Tyler Seguin and locking John Klingberg down on one of the best contracts in the NHL. This includes his work signing free agents, and he’s made some impressive deals. He’s also made some bad deals that had a negative impact on the Dallas Stars, but that’s tomorrow’s article. For today, let’s take a look at the five best free agent signings he’s made.

As a preface before the list, these are all made based on solid evidence of their impact on the team and the future potential of the deal, if they’re still active with the team. By the nature of these being signings within the last five years, there’s only so much information to go off of, especially in regards to deals from last summer.

This list won’t include any deals from this summer, because it’s already too early to make a call on some of these deals, let alone deals that haven’t even kicked in yet.

This list also won’t include any trades for negotiating rights, because that is not a free agent signing. This means no Ben Bishop on today’s list. This also means no Antti Niemi on the list tomorrow.
