Sometimes you just run into the hottest scorer in the league and that happened to the Dallas Stars Thursday night. The Stars would end up losing 4-3 in OT to the Maple Leafs after Matthews shows why he is the number one player in the league right now. Stars did end up picking up a point which is good but two is better. Here is what happened to the Dallas Stars Thursday night against the Leafs.
Dallas Stars vs Toronto Maple Leafs: 1st period recap
Scott Wedgewood is getting tested early by the Leafs as he would save what would be a wrap-around goal. Thomas Harley would shoot the puck towards Jack Campbell and he would stop it with his glove. Vladislav Nameistikov would get another good look on Campbell, but he would be ready for the shot.
Toronto would get a weird goal as the net behind Campbell get dislodged and the players froze on the ice. William Nylander would go down the ice and score on Wedgewood. Tyler Seguin would get one back and tie the game back up. Leafs would go back to being pests in the Stars zone. Wedgewood would save a couple more shot attempts to keep it tied.
Stars would get the first power play of the game after Michael Raffl was checked into the boards and was slow to get up. The Stars looked good on the power play, but the Leafs would kill it. Wedgewood would do his best snowman impression to save a puck he didn’t see go between his legs.
The Leafs would get a power play opportunity in the final minute of the period. Wedgewood would keep this one tied going into the first intermission. The Leafs would lead the Stars in the shots on goal department 15-7. Dallas Stars have to get it going in the 2nd period, Wedgewood can’t hold down the fort like Jake Oettinger can.
Dallas Stars vs Toronto Maple Leafs: 2nd period recap
Stars would commit a penalty in the first minute of the period to send the Leafs on a two man advantage. Wedgewood would be stellar and kill off the penalty from the previous period. Stars would also kill off the penalty from the start of this period as well.
It seems the Leafs want this game more as they would continue to keep the puck in the Stars zone. Stars would get some shots on Campbell, but the Leaf’s defense was there to take away any second chance opportunities.
Midway through the 2nd period, the Stars are being outshot 8-1 by the Leafs. Stars would get things going in the 12th minute of this period by getting some decent shot attempts on Campbell.
John Klingberg would go to the box for tripping and give the Maple Leafs their third power play of the night. Unfortunately, it was going to happen but Auston Matthews couldn’t be stopped on the power play as the Leafs take the lead. Roope Hintz almost tied it up on a turnover in the Leafs zone.
At the end of the 2nd period, the Leafs are up 2-1. They are outshooting the Stars 32-10, and you can pretty much tell what team wants the two points. Stars offense is completely deflated as the Leafs basically controlled the puck for most of the period.
Dallas Stars vs Toronto Maple Leafs: 3rd period recap
Muzzin would trip Radulov and would give the Stars a power play at the beginning of the 3rd period. Stars would get a lot of good shots on net but Campbell would stop them all. He just does not want to allow another Dallas goal tonight.
John Klingberg would tie the game at two on a perfect one-timer from the red circle. The American Airlines Center is buzzing after that game-tying goal.
The Leafs would tie it up after Morgan Reilly sniped one from the red circle to retake the lead. I won’t lie, I thought that puck went high and into the net protecting the crowd. Late in the 3rd period, Pavelski would redirect a puck into the Leafs net and tie the game back up at 3. Stars and Leafs would go to OT and Matthews would basically do his thing to win the game for the Leafs 4-3. Stars are back at it Saturday afternoon against Chicago Blackhawks.
