This was the last thing the Dallas Stars needed trying to get into the playoffs. The Stars would lose to the New Jersey Devils 3-1. The worst thing about this loss was some of the Devil’s roster today was from their AHL team. Stars have to pray that Vegas loses tonight to keep their spot in the playoffs. Here is what happened to the Stars Saturday afternoon at the AAC.

Dallas Stars vs New Jersey Devils: 1st period recap

The Dallas Stars started off the game aggressively by winning the opening faceoff and getting some quick shots on Nico Daws. Esa Lindell was set up beautifully and Daws would swiftly glove his shot and stop play.

Stars would get the power play as Jason Robertson was high sticked by Damon Severson. Joe Pavelski almost had the first goal of the game on the power play but Daws would keep it out with his pad. The power play would expire and the Stars would be 0-1 on the power play today.

Stars have been aggressive in the first half of the period and look better than they did in the previous game. They just haven’t been able to get a goal in the net yet. If they keep this up, they will probably get some goals this afternoon.

Jake Oettinger looks well-rested as he is helping keep the puck out of the net for the Stars. Marian Studenic would miss his wrap-around attempt as the Stars look to get on the board. Joe Pavelski would be denied a third time in the opening frame by Daws.

Late in the 1st period, the Devils would get things going in the Stars zone by testing Oettinger. Oettinger would stop all the attempts by them and the Stars would clear the puck out of the zone. Ryan Suter would commit a stupid cross-checking penalty and give the Devils a power play near the end of the 1st period. Stars would kill the penalty and both teams will be 0-1 on the power play.

Stars and the Devils will go into the first intermission scoreless. Stars would outshoot the Devils 9-7 in the first period and dominate the face offs 11-4. Good period by the Stars overall, just need Daws to get tired in the 2nd period.

Dallas Stars vs New Jersey Devils: 2nd period recap

John Klingberg didn’t waste any time getting into the zone and getting a shot on Daws. Stars would go on a power play to start the 2nd period and Roope Hintz almost got one past Daws. The Devils would kill off the remainder of it and the Stars would go 0-2 on the power play.

Marian Studenic almost got a goal against his former team on the backhand. Jason Robertson almost had a goal himself in front of Daws but he froze and the Devil’s defense clears the puck. Studenic would send the Devils on a power play for tripping about midway through the period.

The Devils would commit a penalty 11 seconds later and now we would have some 4 on 4 hockey for a couple of minutes. Both penalties would be killed off and now we are back to 5 on 5 hockey. Tyler Seguin would get hooked and the Stars would get back on the power play. Stars would really test Daws to start the power play and all the shots could have gone in.

Ryan Suter would bury one from the blue line to give the Stars a power play goal. This goal will probably give the Stars some momentum to keep scoring. The last thing they need to do is play “dump and chase” hockey for the remainder of the game.

Stars would go back on the power play again for the Devils having too many men on the ice. Alexander Radulov almost made it 2-0 Stars, but it would hit the pipe on the side of the net. The power play would expire as the Stars almost broke the game wide open.

Stars would have the lead going into the 2nd intermission 1-0.  Stars would lead in shots on goal 22-14 and would still also lead in faceoffs won 21-18. Stars finally got the lead now the question is can they hold onto the lead in the 3rd period.

Dallas Stars vs New Jersey Devils: 3rd period recap

Oettinger would stop a fast break by the Devils to start off the 3rd period. Stars are also having a hard time getting into the Devil’s zone and setting anything up. Vladislav Namestikov and Jacob Peterson would break into the Devil’s zone and the puck would be pushed aside.

Ty Smith would tie the game for the Devils on a shot from the blue line. The last thing the Stars want to have happen is the Devils taking over and winning this game. Devils would go on the power play shortly after the goal after Miro Heiskanen would slashing Ty Smith.

Stars would draw a penalty in front of the New Jersey net and would go on a power play after waiting seven seconds for the New Jersey power play to retire. The Devils would kill the Stars power play and would go back to 5 on 5 after all the craziness.

Devils have been in control of the 3rd period as they have outshot the Stars 6-2 in the period. Stars need to get another goal and then shut down the Devils for the remainder of the game.

Thomas Hanley would get a good opportunity to score from the blue line but Daws would snatch it with his glove. Sharangovich almost scored to give the Devils the lead but would hit the top crossbar and stay out. Nico Hersher would score with 1:11 left in the game to give the Devils the lead. Pavel Zacha would put the dagger in the coffin 3-1. Stars would lose 3-1 to the Devils and will take on the Blackhawks tomorrow night at 6 PM CT.
