Sometimes all you need is one goal to win a game and that’s the way it went for Dallas tonight. The Dallas Stars survive the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 behind a goal from Roope Hintz and a huge performance from Scott Wedgewood. Stars will stay one point behind the Nashville Predators for that first Wildcard spot in the playoffs. Here is how the Stars upended the Stanley Cup Champions on home ice.
Dallas Stars vs Tampa Bay Lightning: 1st period recap
Scott Wedgewood made an amazing save as his former team blitzed into the Stars zone. Stars would go on the power play early as Alex Killorn would get caught hooking a Stars player. Tyler Seguin would surprise the Lightning by coming out of the corner and getting a shot on the power play. Andrei Vasilevskiy would save his shot attempt and the Lightning would clear it.
Lightning would kill off the power play but the Stars would get some really good shot attempts that wouldn’t go in. Jamie Benn and Nicholas Paul would drop the gloves and give the crowd a nice long fight. Midway through the 1st period, the Stars would lead in shots on goal 5-2. Stars look really energized in the first half of the 1st period.
Jason Robertson would get a shot on Vasilevskiy and he would stop it. Jacob Peterson almost dropped the gloves during the period as well but the refs broke that up before it went too far. Stars would go on the penalty kill as Vladislav Namestnsikov would be called for hooking. Stars would kill the penalty and both teams would be 0 for 1 on the extra man advantage.
Vasilevskiy would step out of goal to try and control the puck and the Stars would almost have an empty-net goal against him. Colton Point would trip Roope Hintz and the Stars would get a power play in the final minute of the period.
Stars and Lightning would go into the first intermission scoreless. Stars and Lighting would also tie in shots on goal with 7 each. Good 1st period for the Dallas Stars, got to keep up the energy and defense in the second period if they want to beat the Lightning.
Dallas Stars vs Tampa Bay Lightning: 2nd period recap
Namestnsikov would be ruled out for the remainder of the game for the check he sustained from the Lighting. Stars would start on the power play due to the penalty that happened in the final minute of the 1st period. Jason Robertson would get a good screen and shot but Tampa would clear it. Stars would end up not scoring on the power play and the Stars would go 0-2 on the extra man advantage.
Paul would get a good shot in front of Wedgewood but he poked the puck away from the front of the net. The Lightning are starting to get things going on offense hanging around in the Star’s zone. Stars would go on the penalty kill as Lindell crossed-checked Anthony Cirelli.
Michael Raffl would have a short-handed attempt and decided to hang on to it. Glendening would have two great opportunities on Lightning’s power play and Vasilevskiy would stop them both. Stars continue to test Vasilevskiy after they killed off the Lightning’s power play.
Tyler Seguin would get a beautiful breakaway pass from Lindell and Vasilevskiy would poke away the puck from him. That was probably the best look that the Stars had all period. Lindell would go back to the box after he would be called for high sticking Stamkos.
Wedgewood might be coming out of the game after Cerelli crashed into the net on a shot attempt. We will see when the 3rd period starts as both teams remain scoreless after two periods. Stars have outshot the Lightning 19-13 through two periods.
Dallas Stars vs Tampa Bay Lightning: 3rd period recap
Dallas Stars start the 3rd period on the power play after Jamie Benn was tripped around center ice. Stars had another “empty net” scenario on the power play, but Robertson didn’t see the puck and the Lightning would clear it. The Lightning would kill the penalty and the Stars would be 0-3 on the power play.
Tyler Seguin would take a puck to the face and would be slow to get up. He would clear the puck and would go to the bench to get looked at. Wedgewood has been phenomenal in the 3rd period keeping this game scoreless.
Stars would have one of the best chances in the 3rd period as the puck would trickle by the right post of Vasilevskiy. Stars are just so close to breaking through from scoring on Tampa’s goaltender.
Roope Hintz finally broke through and gives the Dallas Stars a 1-0 lead late in the 3rd period. Once again the Star’s top line provides scoring in the game. Tampa Bay would pull their goalie and Scott Wedgewood would deny their team as the final seconds tick off.
Stars go on to win 1-0 and get two points against the Stanley Cup Champs. Stars host the Wild Thursday night before going to Canada one last time this season.
