Just when you thought the Dallas Stars were getting back into this game in the 2nd period, Edmonton had other plans. The Dallas Stars lose to the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 as they wrap up the season series against them. The Stars’ top line made themselves known tonight on offense but the rest of the team was on vacation. Here is what happened in Edmonton as Dallas wrapped up their season series against the Oilers.
Dallas Stars vs Edmonton Oilers: 1st period recap
43 seconds into the game, Radek Faksa would test Mike Smith early and he would corral the puck with his glove. Evander Kane would score the first goal of the game after sneaking up on Scott Wedgewood.
Ryan Nugent Hopkins would get a shot on Wedgewood as soon as he entered the zone and Wedgewood deflected it away. Derek Ryan would score off a deflection off of the post to make it 2-0 Oilers. Esa Lindell will go to the penalty box for holding to give the Oilers the first power play of the game.
Leon Draisaitl would snipe one towards Wedgewood on the power play and he would save it. Stars would kill the power play and the Oilers would be 0-1 on the power play. Stars would go on the power play for too many Oilers on the ice.
Denis Gurianov would get a good shot on Mike Smith and he would deflect it to the side. Tyler Seguin would get the same opportunity and Smith would deny him as well. The power play would expire and the Stars would be 0-1.
Jason Robertson would finally get the Stars on the board on a slap shot laser to cut the Oiler’s lead to 1. With the assist on the goal, John Klingberg would get his 300th career assist. A huge milestone for any player in this league.
Just the thing that the Stars needed to remain in the game. Stars would pull their goalie as they did a couple of weeks ago with 4 seconds left to try to get a last-second goal.
The Oilers lead the Stars 2-1 after the 1st period, Oilers lead in shots on goal 19-14. Thanks to Robertson, the Stars were able to cut the lead to 1 to keep them in the game. Need to be more aggressive on offense in front of Smith.
Dallas Stars vs Edmonton Oilers: 2nd period recap
Esa Lindell would start the period off for the Stars by firing a shot on Smith and it would miss the net. Jamie Benn would slice his way through the Oilers’ defense and would lose control of the puck before trying to make a shot.
Roope Hintz would tie things up at 2 after Mike Smith lost sight of the puck. The Stars have completely changed the momentum of this game after Hintz’s goal. The Stars are showing us what the definition of “grit no quit” is. It’s super quiet in Rodger’s Place Arena right now.
Joe Pavelski almost scored to give the top line all goals in this game, but Smith would deflect it away. Alexander Radulov almost caught Smith handling the puck behind the net but Radulov would be a second late to intercept the puck for an easy goal.
Wedgewood would make an amazing save as multiple Oilers would try to jam it past him. It’s amazing that it’s not 3-2 Oilers right now. Zac Hyman would score on a Wedgewood deflection to make it 3-2 Oilers late in the 2nd period.
Hyman would try to score his second goal of the period on the backhand but Wedgewood would cover it up and hold on to it. Jesse Puljujarvi would score late in the 2nd period to give the Oilers a 4-2 lead.
The Oilers would have a 4-2 lead going into the final intermission of the game. The Oilers are leading in shots on goal 40-25. When you thought the Stars were back in this game, Edmonton took the game back over. Stars need a prayer in the 3rd if they want to win this game.
Dallas Stars vs Edmonton Oilers: 3rd period recap
The Stars would spend their entire first shift of the 3rd period in their zone. Hyman almost got his second goal of the game but Wedgewood would deflect it away. Stars just can’t get set up on offense in the Oiler’s zone and it’s hurting their chance at a comeback. Klingberg sent a one-timer at the net and Mike Smith would make the save and the Oilers would clear.
Midway through the final period of the game, the Oilers are in complete control of this game keeping the puck in the Star’s zone killing time. Darnell Nurse would cause the arena to buzz as he checked Jamie Benn hard into the Oiler’s bench.
The Stars are using the dump and chase method to try to get back into the game and it’s not working. Stars would pull their goalie with 3 minutes remaining in the game to try to get a goal. Joe Pavelski would have the best opportunity but Mike Smith would make another highlight-reel save against the Stars. Connor McDavid scored the empty netter to make it 5-2 Oilers.
The Stars fall to the Oilers on the road by a final score of 5-2. The Star’s next game will be tomorrow night at 8:30 as they wrap up their final road game this season against the Calgary Flames.
