The Dallas Stars let up on defense once again in the 3rd period and it costs them once again in the playoffs. The Stars lose to the Calgary Flames 3-1 and now are on the brink of elimination Friday night. Here is what happened in Calgary during game 5 at the Saddledome.

Dallas Stars vs Calgary Flames Game 5: 1st period recap

Jason Robertson seemed to be really hungry for his first playoff goal tonight. He’s been all over the ice trying to get one to go past Jacob Markstrom. Early in the period, Jake Oettinger stopped a Matthew Tkachuk breakaway to keep the game scoreless.

The Stars would get the first power play of the game and fail to get anything going on the power play. Later in the period, the Stars would get their first real test on defense going on the penalty kill. The Stars would be successful in killing off their extra man advantage.

At the end of the period, the Stars and the Flames would remain scoreless. The Stars and the Flames would tie in the shots on goal category at 7 shots each.  The Stars would lead in the faceoffs category 8-6. It was a good first period overall for the Stars getting pressure on Markstrom and shutting down their power play. Stars have to keep this up as the game goes on and get the puck in the net.

Dallas Stars vs Calgary Flames Game 5: 2nd period recap

The Dallas Stars really cranked down on the Flames’ top lines in the 2nd period. Jake Oettinger also had an outstanding second period making sure the game remained scoreless. Jason Robertson would finally break through to the score sheet to give the stars a 1-0 lead.

The Stars finished up the 2nd period by killing off a Flames power play attempt. At the end of the 2nd period, the Stars would take a 1-0 lead going into the final period. The Stars and the Flames would be tied in shots on goal with 16 and in total hits with 18. Stars need to have one more really good period on defense and get at least one more goal to control this series heading back to Dallas.

Dallas Stars vs Calgary Flames Game 5: 3rd period recap

This was not the start to the 3rd period that the Stars would want. Mikael Backlund would score first in the third period to tie the game at 1. Andrew Mangiapane would give the Flames the first lead of the game shortly after the game-tying goal.

Dallas would pull their goalie with 1:59 left in the game and Trevor Lewis would finish the Stars’ hopes of winning this game with an empty-net goal. The Calgary Flames would win 3-1 and the Stars are on the brink of elimination when they return home Friday night.
