The Dallas Stars continue their roadtrip up north with a stop in Washington DC to take on the Capitals. After exorcising the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night, the Stars will be taking on Alex Ovechkin. He will be looking to pass Gordie Howe into second place for most goals by a hockey player. Hopefully the Stars can apply that same defense that they did against the Devils on him.

Dallas Stars vs Washington Capitals preview: 3. Protect the red circles

The red face-off circles are Ovechkin’s favorite places to hammer one-timers from. This must be a priority for the Stars tonight. They can’t let him hover in this area, they need to force him to take shots from other places on the ice. If the Stars can take care of business and limit the shots from the red face-off circles, I like our chances of winning in Washington tomorrow night.

Dallas Stars vs Washington Capitals preview: 2. Get off to a quick start

The Stars need to get off to a quick start in Washington Thursday night. Washington is one of those teams where the crowd can really motivate them to score first. They need to silence that crowd in Washington in the first period. Personally, I don’t care who scores for the Dallas Stars as long as they silence that crowd in the first period.

Dallas Stars vs Washington Capitals preview: 1. Goalie issue

I know I will probably get some comments on social media for saying this but I would really like to see Wedgewood start again. Wedgewood was amazing against the Devils only allowing one goal. Jake Oettinger has played a lot of games over the last week and he needs some rest.

I want to see how many quality games Wedgewood can play in a row. This is a perfect road trip for him to be the starting goaltender. All the teams that the Stars are playing are in the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference. The Stars won’t have to worry about possible tiebreakers against any of these teams. This way we don’t have a super tired Oettinger if we make the playoffs again this season.
