Well, the Dallas Stars weren’t able to break the Boston Bruin’s hearts on Valentine’s Day. The Stars couldn’t capitalize on their power play opportunities tonight and the Stars would end up losing in OT again 3-2. Stars’ fans shouldn’t be mad at the effort on the ice tonight. They gave it their all to the best team in hockey this season. It would be nice to get two points tonight but if you can steal a point against the Bruins, that’s a small victory. Here are the three takeaways from tonight.

Dallas Stars vs Boston Bruins Recap: 3. Got to win the matchups against the big boys

The Stars have to figure out how to win against the big boys before the playoffs start in April. The Stars have been swept by the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins this season. You aren’t going to make it far in the playoffs if you can’t compete against the top teams in the league. The Stars should be concerned as the Winnipeg Jets and the Minnesota Wild are gunning for the top spot in the Central Division. You have to win on the road against Minnesota Friday night.

Dallas Stars vs Boston Bruins Recap: 2. Play your assignment

I saw a lot of Stars players leave their assignment throughout the game and Jake Oettinger had to scramble and save the puck. I understand if the Stars were double-teaming certain players throughout the night but Collin Miller should have stayed on Taylor Hall in the 1st period. Sometimes you can’t overpress teams to the point there are open players in front of Oettinger or Scott Wedgewood.

Dallas Stars vs Boston Bruins Recap: 1. Top line is back in action

After seeming like the league figured out how to shut down our top line, they came up huge tonight. Roope Hintz opened up the scoring for the Stars and Jason Robertson added an insurance goal in the second period. They have to continue finding the back of the net in order for the Stars to keep first place in the Central Division. They have a couple of days off before a quick trip to finish the season series against the Minnesota Wild which they need to win.
